It's Fall, ya'll!

To celebrate the first day of fall, we read Lois Ehlert's book Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf. It follows the life cycle of a maple tree.

Then we did a science experiment to try to figure out what color some of our playground trees will turn later in fall. We gathered leaves from 2 different trees on our playground, tore and grinded them up and poured rubbing alcohol on them. Next, we made strips of coffee filters and let them hand down into the cups where it just touched the alcohol and leaves. By the afternoon, we could see what color those trees' leaves will turn when it get cooler and the leaves start to turn. Our results: One tree was a pecan (we think it will turn a yellow color) and we aren't sure what the other tree was but we think it will turn brown. We are going to watch the trees and see if we are right.
